This year has far been one of the most diverse we had in Metrophoto, both int terms of locations and the type of concepts that we were able to execute. We know that while this is the case, we still have so much more on our list of dream destinations and concepts and by no means did we expect to close them out any time soon. This is most especially true to that item that is on top of that list – shooting the not only the elusive, but also the complicated Aurora Borealis. But we realised that we had a great opportunity when we researched and found out that one of best places on Earth to see and shoot the magical lights was just north of Canada – a place we are scheduled to visit this year. So we decided we are going to try and make it happen. Emphasis on the word try because apparently, after we have booked everything, we found out that the Northern Lights is the faintest during the time we set to go. But like in all things, there are risks – some are small, some are big and some are unavoidable. Ours is the last one, and all we could do was hope because our schedule only allowed us to have one night in Yellowknife and that means just once chance.

Days leading to the trip to Yellow Knife, the Aurora Borealis forecast was not good – ok but not good and definitely not great. It still wasn’t when we got there but definitely ‘moderate’ is better than none. What we were blessed with was a diffused glow because of the cloudy weather that evening. We really wanted the streaks, the dancing lights, and the multitude of colors but like we said, diffused is better than nothing. If we were in any place other than Yellowknife with that weather, we wouldn’t have seen anything. So while it is not exactly the photographs we imagined, what we got is equally enchanting and still very much one-of-a-kind. Thus is the case that even a preview photo deserved this blog post of its own.

For now, wonder with us in this preview photo of Liz and Marco’s Northen Lights Prewedding. We can’t wait to post the entire set. It took a lot of effort, a lot of money, a lot of photography skills, and a lot of physical and mental courage to achieve such photograph and we’re very grateful that the lights have aligned for us.
